Bonne Terre, MO

Bonne Terre was at one time the richest lead ore in the world. When discovered by the French, it was christened Le Terre Bonne, or “the Good Earth,” referring to the mineral wealth. Be sure to visit the world’s largest man-made caverns. The upper two levels are lit and feature walking tours. The lower three levels are illuminated by 500,000 watts of stadium lighting. Apart from boat tours, you could also undertake scuba diving in the world’s largest freshwater scuba diving venue. Taum Sauk Mountain State Park 

If you want to be on top of Missouri, head out to the Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, which is about 1 hour 44 minutes from Cape Girardeau. If you take a short hike from the parking lot, you can easily reach the tallest point in Missouri at 1,772 feet. You can also make your way to the Mina Sauk Falls. The park also offers camping, hiking and backpacking trails, and picnicking spots.   

Carlyle Lake, IL 

If you’re looking to enjoy some outdoor water-oriented sports, the largest man-made lake in Illinois is only 2 hours 10 minutes from Cape Girardeau. There are a host of activities you could participate in, such as boating, fishing, hunting, and birdwatching. They also have sand beaches and camping areas.
